Shooting the Paddle Butt Wheellock Carbine from Rifle Shoppe Castings
The invention of the wheellock in Europe can be placed at about 1500. There is a vocal group of scholars who believe Leonardo da Vinci was the inventor. Drawings made by Leonardo of a wheellock mechanism date (depending on the authority) from either the mid-1490s or the first decade of the 16th century. However, a drawing from a book of German inventions (dated 1505) and a 1507 reference to the purchase of a wheellock in Austria may indicate the inventor was an unknown German mechanic instead.
In 1517 and 1518, the first gun control laws banning the wheellock were proclaimed by the Emperor Maximilian I, initially in Austria and later throughout the Holy Roman Empire. Several Italian states followed suit in the 1520s and 1530s, another argument used by the pro-German camp.
As Lisa Jardine relates in her account of the assassination of William the Silent of the Netherlands, in 1584, the small size, ease of concealment and user-friendly loading aspect of the wheellock, compared to larger and more cumbersome hand-held weapons, meant that it was used for the killing of public figures, such as Francis, Duke of Guise and William himself. Jardine also argues that a stray wheellock pistol shot may have been responsible for the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of French Huguenots in 1572
Wheellock pistols were in common use during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) on both sides for cavalry and officers. Around 1650 the flintlock began to replace the wheellock as it was cheaper and easier to use than the wheellock.
Wheel-lock firearms were never mass-produced for military purposes, but the best preserved armoury collection at the Landeszeughaus in Graz, Austria, contains over 3,000 examples, many of which were produced in small batches for military units.

A couple of tips number one make your match cord by boiling it in ash water first. Allowing it to dry and then soaking It in a potassium nitrate brine that has been diluted in water about 50% potassium nitrate. Once you have done this, allow it to dry for about a week and you will have a really good match court and really reliable ignition. Also, if you make your own powder that is not graphite coated, it is much more reliable with a match lock

@@Real11BangBang Thank you very much for the tips. Interesting for me was the fact that the pan powder was really not that easy to set off ! I'm making some new matchcord right now .

I took the time this afternoon to make a new hickory ramrod. Then scraped all the finish/paint off the stock and put a coat of oil varnish on it. The stock seems to be some sort of fruit wood and has some pretty nice figure. Improved the look of the gun 100 % I think I'm going to really like this ! I will try for deer with it this Fall

I think your list is pretty spot on. I like the 51 Navy very much! I like Colt firearms in general. The early Patterson was not so great but was used to its fullest potential by the Texas rangers. Let's face it it was the beginning of a great company. I enjoyed your video. Thank you.

Effective killing range with the Bess was within 30 yrds. near wounding range was inside 50 yrds (lower leg) due to powder none wadded loads and .750 cal ball. Charleville was was .690 cal which was deadlier at 50 yards due to the lighter ball. Carried more energy further out... stands to reason when is comes to BP ...Hence .50 cal over .45 argument kicks in. Putting each through a coronagraph isn't a good show or good source of consistency , every gun is different and shoots different and whether the moon was out the night before...learn your gun....

Love this video!. Btw i think the stigma that smoothbore muskets were so inaccurate was mostly caused by lack of training of the soldiers. People that trained with firearms could be combat ready as quick as few weeks, but obviously that doesn't mean they have the same effectiveness as someone who shoot for a living. Even light infantry, soldiers who properly trained in marksmanship most of them were equipped with improved version of smoothbore muskets during napoleonic wars while only around third of them equipped with rifles. Even then, during American Civil War despite the rifled muskets that were commonly used theoritically could hit a target at 600 yards, most of the battle happen only at 150 yards and closer because training the soldiers to use the weapon up to its potential is expensive, only few soldiers could use the rifled muskets effectively and the usage of muskets with buck&ball during the war gained some popularity (i learned this from Paper Cartridges)

Great music, be good if could list it in the description in future. Google gave the me song that I am now learning for my next local session. On the firearms and as a black powder shooter, I want to get a musket. It was going to be a Brown Bess but, even though I am 5th generation Australian, my maternal great grandfather ×5, severed in the American Revolution Army. To quote the notes on the family tree "On the 5 May 1775 John Rankins enlisted in the army from Lebanon, Maine, USA in Captain Ebenezer Sullivan's Company, of the 13th Regiment of the Foot, commanded by Colonel James Scammon and belonging to the Army of the UNITED STATES of America. John served until 1782 discharging as a Sergeant". Should I endeavor for a Brown Bess or a Charliville musket to replicate what grandad was using in the revolution?

You shouldn't need to harden your Hammer right off the bat, it should be plenty hard enough. Obviously you'll want to check for spark but it took a few thousand rounds for the hammer on this French musket to get to where it wouldn't spark anymore

The heavy loaded 44 magnum will out penetrate the 45 Colt. Max Prasac wrote a Gun Digest Book of Hunting Revolvers. Two tests were done between the 45 Colt and 44 magnum. In both tests the best 44 magnum loads out penetrated the 45 Colt loads. I highly recommend Max Prasac’s books.
